Málaga Breaks Tourism Records as Visitor Numbers Reach New Highs
Málaga and the Costa del Sol continue to strengthen their position as one of Europe’s most popular destinations, with record-breaking visitor numbers, airport traffic, and hotel occupancy levels highlighting the region’s growing international appeal.
From cultural tourism and gastronomy to luxury real estate and world-class golf courses, the province has evolved into a year-round destination attracting millions of visitors from across Europe and beyond.
More Than 14.6 Million Visitors to the Costa del Sol
According to Turismo Costa del Sol, the destination welcomed approximately 14.65 million visitors in 2025, setting a new all-time record and generating an estimated €21.8 billion in tourism revenue. That represents an increase of around 171,000 visitors compared with the previous year and further confirms the Costa del Sol’s resilience and attractiveness.
International tourism continues to drive growth, with the UK remaining the largest source market, followed by Germany, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, and increasingly North America and Asia.
Málaga Airport Continues to Smash Records
The success of tourism is clearly reflected at Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which handled a record 26.76 million passengers in 2025, surpassing all previous records and approaching 187,000 aircraft movements.
Summer months proved particularly busy, with July and August each welcoming almost 2.9 million passengers. Even the shoulder seasons recorded exceptional figures, demonstrating how the Costa del Sol is becoming less dependent on traditional summer tourism.
The airport’s momentum has continued into 2026. During the first five months of the year alone, more than 10.4 million passengers passed through the airport, representing a further increase of 7.1% compared with the same period in 2025. Around 83% of passengers travelled on international routes, underlining Málaga’s global connectivity.
Hotel Occupancy Remains Exceptionally Strong
The hotel sector has also enjoyed another highly successful year. According to the Costa del Sol hotel association AEHCOS, average hotel occupancy across the Costa del Sol reached 78.7% in 2025, exceeding pre-pandemic levels and improving slightly on 2024.
In Málaga city itself, occupancy rates during the first months of 2025 exceeded 78%, while overnight stays continued to rise, demonstrating the city’s increasing popularity as a cultural and urban destination.
Recent figures show that April 2026 saw hotel room occupancy in Málaga city climb to almost 87%, with longer average stays and continued growth driven by international visitors.
Quality Tourism Over Quantity
While visitor numbers continue to rise, local authorities and tourism bodies are increasingly focused on attracting higher-value tourism rather than simply increasing arrivals.
Luxury hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, golf resorts, marinas, and a thriving cultural scene have helped transform Málaga and the Costa del Sol into one of the Mediterranean’s most desirable destinations. Tourism revenue has grown faster than visitor numbers, reflecting a strategy centred on quality and sustainability rather than mass tourism.
Positive Outlook for the Future
Industry forecasts remain optimistic. New air routes, growing interest from North America and Asia, and continued investment in infrastructure are expected to support further growth in the coming years.
At the same time, authorities are focusing on balancing tourism growth with sustainability, transport improvements, and housing availability to ensure the Costa del Sol remains both an attractive destination and an exceptional place to live.
A Destination That Continues to Thrive
Record visitor numbers, a booming airport, strong hotel occupancy, and increasing international demand all point to one conclusion: Málaga and the Costa del Sol have never been more popular.
For residents, investors, and second-home buyers alike, the region’s continued success reinforces why the Costa del Sol remains one of Europe’s premier lifestyle destinations—a place where tourism, culture, business, and quality of life come together under more than 320 days of sunshine each year.
